These are some of the things that help me enjoy doing my work
My Desk
Computers
- MacBook Pro 16” (M2 Pro) (work laptop)
- Mac mini M4 base-model
Peripherals
- Blue Yeti Microphone
- Logitech Brio Webcam
- Magic Trackpad (almost exclusively for scrolling and zooming)
- Magic Keyboard with TouchID
- In theory, I would really like a mechanical keyboard of some variety to click-clack away gloriously, but some trial and error has proven to me that I am one of the few people that actually really prefer a low low-profile keyboard. TouchID being integrated is also really helpful for Single Sign-On shenanigans.
- Logitech MX Master 3
- Best mouse ever, no arguments welcome - I’ve used mine so much that the friction is rubbing off some of the rubber grip
- XPPen StarG640 Drawing Tablet
- Pretty good for the price, helps me write out things without switching devices or use paper
- CalDigit TS3+ Dock
- It was unreasonably hard to find a reasonably priced dock that works with Macs and properly supports multi-monitor setups with a single (Thunderbolt) cable.
- I bought this one used off of eBay (without the power adapter, because I had one lying around)
- Dell 27 QHD Monitor SE2723DS (x2)
- Flexispot EN1 (55” x 28”) Sit-stand desk
- Komene Ergonomic Office Chair (The Gamers Nexus one)
- Beats Solo Pro 3
- Not the best sounding or most comfortable headphones in the world, but gets the job done - I should get a wired pair of headphones at some point
- Double-head LED Lamp
Software
There are a few notable software things I like using:
- Notion
- This is a love-hate situation for me - Notion is one of the very few note-taking tools that actually do absolutely everything I need it to without having to invest tons of time configuring arcane plugins and extensions and having to worry about it working. Unfortunately, it is also slow and buggy.. offline access to content is still largely unsolved, the interface is increasingly convoluted, yet it is the tool I keep turning back to, to get things done.
- Youtube Premium / Youtube Music
- This is a pretty good deal in my opinion, YT has lots of niche music that doesn't get uploaded to other streaming platforms. Youtube Premium is increasingly a necessity unless you want to spend time wrangling the intricacies of ad-blockers
- A password manager
- Fastmail
- Backblaze B2 for my backing up my data at a very reasonable price
- Many backup solutions, like
rclone
can write directly to B2
- Many backup solutions, like
Mac Tools:
- iStateMenus
- Rectangle
- xbar
- Maccy Clipboard Manager
- Arc
- I think Arc has really great UX rethinking several fundamental aspects of how people really use web browsers today. I really like the space / tab organization features and Little Arc. Another small but important thing was how it changed in my mind what a “website” was, with full-screen browsing.
Other Devices
- iPhone 12 Pro Max
- I am mostly in favor of smaller phones - I wanted to know what the hype with ultra large screens was about. So far.. meh 🤷♂️ - I like the phone but the next one won’t be this big
- Galaxy S24+ (work phone)
- DeX is really nice
- This phone has a large screen, but is much more comfortable to hold than the iPhone. Good job Samsung on the sizing.
- I miss iMessage, AirDrop and Find My.. and MagSafe.. for some reason. Otherwise, Android (at least OneUI) and iOS are pretty much the same these days UX wise
- Steam Deck
- ❤️
- Synology NAS
- Colmi RO2 Smart Ring
- Knock-off Oura, surprisingly functional for the price
Other Stuff
- Bialetti Moka Pot (3-cup)
- Stick-on whiteboards
- Bigger and more “in-your-face” than sticky notes, and much more reusable!
- Label Maker
